In an exclusive interview with Drive Time, Carragher admits he had known since last summer the Spaniard wanted to quit Anfield.

And Carragher reckons Kenny Dalglish has pulled off a great bit of business by selling him to Chelsea for £50million and bringing in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll.

“I think it’s been in the offing since the summer, we always felt that at some stage this season or maybe the end of the season this may happen,” the Reds star revealed.

“I think for us it was probably better that Fernando moved on, if he didn’t 100 per cent want to be here or it was going to happen in the summer. And it’s probably better for everyone all round.

“We’ve got two young hungry lads who have got a lot to prove for Liverpool over the next few years and hopefully the two of them will be here for the next decade.

“They’re that young that they could possibly play ten years for the club if everything went well and they performed well together. So, from that point of view we can look at it and say we’re pleased with what we’ve brought in and what business we’ve done.”

Carragher insists he holds no grudges towards Torres, though, and reckons the Spaniard should be fondly remembered by Liverpool fans.

“I’m not going to criticise him, we bought him for 20 odd million we sold him for 50. Whether people agree with how he’s gone, supporters can’t deny he was an absolutely fantastic player for Liverpool,” he added.

“His goals record was up there with the greats - Rush, Aldridge, Fowler, Owen. Unfortunately he decided to do that but that’s football, players move on and we have to accept that now and not criticise Torres but use our energies to get behind the two new boys.”

Liverpool have won their last three games to climb up to seventh in the table but Carragher insists the players are not getting carried away by claims they could still clinch a top-four spot.

“I think when the manager came in he would have been delighted with the top six, obviously we’re there or thereabouts now,” he added.

“At the moment we should be pleased we’re in the top six, see how the next few weeks go and if we get closer to them teams who are in the top four or five that will be great and maybe six or seven games to go we can think maybe we can catch these yet. But let’s be glad at where we are now.”

Reds defender not preparing to hang up his boots just yet

Jamie Carragher has shrugged off his 'veteran' tag by insisting that he has no plans to retire any time soon.

The Liverpool defender is a Premier League stalwart with over 650 appearances to his name.

Such a record, coupled with his 33 years of age, have led some to suggest that he could be approaching the twilight of his career.

Carragher, though, is adamant that he can compete at the top level for some time yet, with stepping aside something he is not prepared to consider until at least 2013.

"I want to play for Liverpool as long as I can," the former England international told the Liverpool Echo.

"I picked up some of the papers after the Chelsea game and each one said 'veteran Carragher'.

"It made me think to myself: 'God, I mustn't have too long left'.

"I know that at a minimum I have two-and-a-half years, and that time will fly."

Aggression

Carragher's aim this season is to help Liverpool cement a top-six standing in the Premier League and secure European qualification for next season.

One man set to aid that cause over the coming weeks is record signing Andy Carroll, with the £35million striker closing on full fitness and an eagerly-anticipated debut.

On the threat Carroll will pose, Carragher said: "We've had big tall lads, people like [Emile] Heskey or [Peter] Crouch who have done very well for us.

"But Carroll has that aggression that makes defenders fear him. He seems like a good lad, someone who'll fit in.

"As a defender you know when you go into certain games against particular players that you're going to have a hard day.

"There aren't too many of them but I know few people will relish playing against Andy. You wake up in the morning and think, 'Ah God, I don't want to play against him'.

"Everyone who has faced him probably thinks, 'I don't need this today'."

Je crois que c'est notre meilleur défenseur cette saison, il a enchainé des performances de très bonne facture, et donne bien plus de garanties derrière que Skrtel. Difficile de le comparer avec Agger, car ce dernier ne joue pas suffisamment, tandis que notre Carra est un rock!

Tout à fait! Pour qu'il joue à ce niveau, faudra qu'il joue un certain nombre de matchs par saison, qu'il en joue beaucoup moins. Il ne peut plus jouer 50-60 matchs par saison à mon avis.

Kelly axial alors? Je me souviens que tu m'avais dit qu'il était un défenseur central de formation mais bon il est bien aussi sur le côté...A voir!

"On aurait préféré être qualifier en Europa League, mais ça n'est pas arrivé, et on doit regarder le positif. L'objectif de la saison prochaine est de se qualifier pour la Ligue des Champions. Ne pas être en compétition européenne nous donnera une meilleure chance de le faire. On veut retrouver le Top 4, et gagner des coupes. Jouer le jeudi et le dimanche n'est pas l'idéal. Il y a donc un point positif à ne pas jouer la Ligue Europa. Terminer sixième est une bonne prestation quand on regarde où on était en janvier."

Il est tout à fait objéctif et très franchement je pense la même chose que lui pour l'E.L; c'est peut être un mal pour un bien de ne pas être européen cette année; par contre c'est clair qu'il va nous falloir au moins un titre l'an prochain parce que sinon ça risque de faire vraiment tache....

Pettite question; la dernière fois que nous avons finis une saison sans être européen c'était quand ?

Petit interview de Jamie Carragher. Il parle notamment de son après carrière ( on peut comprendre qu'il n'envisage pas de faire une très très longue carrière à la Maldini). Il prend notamment des cours de coaching.

Il revient également la décision qu'il avait pris l'année dernière, c'est à dire de sortir un temps de sa carrière international pour jouer la coupe du monde.

The 33-year-old stalwart of Kenny Dalglish’s defence says he recognises his illustrious Liverpool career is entering its twilight. But he has already taken the first steps towards management and hopes Dalglish will call upon him for the foreseeable future.

"The time will come (to stop playing) in the next 12, 18 months, maybe two years,” said Carragher. “That won't be down to myself. It will be down to the people around me, the staff the manager. They will decide.

"You want to try to get as much out of your career and play as long as possible. Beyond that I want to stay in football.

"I've taken my first steps to coaching and the UEFA ‘B’ licence. Once I finish playing I will have some decisions to make, whether that's inside the club or outside of it, in the game or not.

"I love the game and want to stay involved in the game but there are a lot of people out there who want to do the same.”

Carragher says his decision to come out of international retirement for last year’s World Cup in South Africa was the ‘first time I have put my own interests before the club’.

"We had just had a disastrous season at Liverpool finishing seventh and I thought my career was on a nosedive,” said Carragher.

“It was more Man United and the rest. They'd all grown up together and they had been in youth teams together. They would always sit together at meal times.

"It was just like the five best mates together. A lot of it was at the dinner table.

“There was no hostility there. It was more like there were that many of them. They had such a good team. They probably had 7 or 8 in the squad at the same time.

"It was probably difficult for anyone to break into that little group and get to know them."

C'est important de s'assurer que je revienne à 100%. J’espère être prêt pour affronter Chelsea lors de la prochaine journée, mais je ne pense pas encore à cela maintenant."
